About Ducat: non-custodial Bitcoin-backed credit on Layer 1

Ducat is a Bitcoin L1-native credit and stablecoin protocol that lets BTC holders borrow dollar-pegged stablecoins (UNIT or USDC) against their Bitcoin without giving up custody.

Ducat charges 0% ongoing interest and a one-time 7% minting service charge on the borrow amount, applied when UNIT is minted. Ducat is in Mainnet Closed Alpha, and access is invite-only through a ticket in the Ducat Discord.

What Ducat Does

Ducat's main products and features are Bitcoin-backed borrowing vaults, the UNIT stablecoin, USDC delivery via the Circle SDK, the vault dashboard, permissionless liquidations, the Ducat SDK and Ducat validators.

Bitcoin-backed loans in non-custodial vaults

Ducat lets a BTC holder lock Bitcoin in a 2-of-2 Taproot multisig vault and borrow UNIT or USDC against it: one key is the borrower's, and the other is held by the Guardian network. Borrowers set a collateral ratio from 160% (aggressive) to 250%+ (conservative), so a Ducat loan can be up to 62.5% of the vault's BTC value. Borrowers can repay any time and redeem their BTC in a single Bitcoin block (~10 minutes), and once the debt is cleared, nobody can stop them from getting their Bitcoin back.

UNIT, a stablecoin issued on Bitcoin L1

UNIT is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued natively on Bitcoin L1 using the Runes token standard and backed by overcollateralised BTC locked in Ducat vaults. UNIT is soft-pegged to USD in the $1.01 to $1.04 range through overcollateralisation and arbitrage, and it is minted when a borrower borrows and burned when the borrower repays. Ducat describes UNIT as early: peg stability depends on having enough market liquidity and participants.

USDC loans, converted via the Circle SDK

A Ducat borrower who chooses USDC receives USDC directly: Ducat mints UNIT behind the scenes, converts it 1:1 to USDC via the Circle SDK and delivers the USDC. Repayment works in reverse: the borrower sends USDC, and the protocol handles the conversion and closes the vault.

Vault dashboard

The Ducat dashboard shows each vault's collateral ratio, real-time health factor and liquidation price. From the dashboard, a borrower can deposit more BTC or repay part of the debt to keep the collateral ratio well above the 135% liquidation threshold.

Permissionless liquidations

When a Ducat vault's collateral ratio falls below 135%, any participant can recapitalise the position and buy the vault's BTC at a discount, and Ducat's documentation specifies no whitelisting and no preferred liquidators. Ducat's Terms of Service geo-restrict the web app's liquidation auctions in some jurisdictions. Each vault's liquidation price is calculated and locked when the vault opens, and it is recorded on-chain.

Ducat SDK for institutions

The Ducat SDK is a Rust-based SDK for programmatic vault management. The Ducat SDK lets institutional teams build BTC transactions locally, manage positions, monitor collateral ratios and automate redemptions, while the institution's own team keeps full control of its key material (Ducat for institutions).

Ducat validators

Anyone can run a Ducat validator. Validators parse Bitcoin data, reconstruct the full protocol state from on-chain OP_RETURN metadata and produce a deterministic ledger. Ducat validators have no signing power and exist only to verify the protocol and provide transparency (how validators work).

What Makes Ducat Different

Ducat competes with custodial Bitcoin lenders such as Ledn, with Unchained's collaborative-custody loans, and with wrapped-bitcoin borrowing on Aave and Coinbase. Competitor details below come from each competitor's own website or, for Aave, its on-chain market settings, checked in September 2026; the Celsius figures are historical and come from its July 2022 bankruptcy filing as reported at the time. Ducat is newer than these lenders and has less track record, and Ducat is not the only non-custodial option: Lava and Hodl Hodl also let people borrow against Bitcoin without a company holding the BTC.

  1. A one-time 7% charge instead of Ledn's 11.49% APR

Ducat charges 0% ongoing interest and a one-time 7% minting service charge on the borrow amount, whereas Ledn charges 11.49% APR on loans under $250,000 and 9.25% APR on loans of $2,000,000 or more, with a 12-month standard loan term, as of September 2026. At those rates, Ledn's interest passes Ducat's one-time 7% after about 7.3 months (about 9.1 months at the 9.25% tier), so Ducat costs less on longer loans and Ledn costs less on shorter ones. Ledn states that a 2% administration fee is included where applicable, though not for clients in Canada and the United States, and that its rates and fees vary by jurisdiction, so the exact break-even differs from borrower to borrower.

  2. Borrow up to 62.5% of BTC value, against Ledn's typical 50%

Ducat lets a borrower borrow up to 62.5% of a vault's BTC value, which corresponds to Ducat's 160% minimum collateral ratio, whereas Ledn lists a typical initial loan-to-value ratio of 50%, as of September 2026. Ducat does not offer the highest loan-to-value in the market: Aave's WBTC and cbBTC markets on Aave V3 Ethereum Core allowed a higher maximum loan-to-value than 62.5% in September 2026, although that collateral is wrapped bitcoin rather than native BTC.

  3. A liquidation price fixed at vault creation, unlike Ledn's daily-accruing loans

Ducat calculates each vault's liquidation price when the vault opens, locks it and records it on-chain, and Ducat charges no ongoing interest, so no interest accrues while the vault is open. Ledn states that interest accrues daily and that at or above 80% loan-to-value, liquidation is automatic and irreversible: Ledn sells collateral to cover the outstanding balance, applies a 0.50% trade spread and returns any remainder, as of September 2026. A Ducat liquidation needs two independent confirmations, a Chainlink price attestation and a Guardian check against a secondary, non-Chainlink price feed, and it sells the vault's BTC to a liquidator at a discount, with penalties and fees that reduce what the borrower recovers.

  4. BTC in a 2-of-2 vault, not in a lender's custody as with Ledn

Ducat locks BTC in a 2-of-2 Taproot multisig vault on Bitcoin L1 that neither the borrower nor the Guardian network can move alone and whose BTC cannot be lent or rehypothecated, and Ducat has no admin keys and no ability to freeze vaults. Ledn states that collateral on its custodied loans remains in custody for the life of the loan and may only be re-posted to an institutional USD funding partner or a Ledn-sponsored financing vehicle, where it is legally ring-fenced or held in bankruptcy-remote structures and cannot be lent out for yield, as of September 2026. Separately, Celsius Network, a custodial lender that lent customer Bitcoin to institutional borrowers, froze withdrawals on 12 June 2022 and filed for bankruptcy in July 2022 owing its users about $4.7 billion (Bitcoin lending after Celsius).

  5. Native BTC collateral, not WBTC or cbBTC as on Aave and Coinbase

Ducat takes native BTC as collateral, and Ducat's BTC collateral is never bridged or wrapped: vaults, liquidations and redemptions settle on Bitcoin L1. Aave's bitcoin markets use tokens such as WBTC and cbBTC, and Coinbase states that its bitcoin-backed loans convert the pledged BTC to cbBTC, a token Coinbase describes as backed 1:1 by bitcoin it holds, and transfer it to a Morpho smart contract on Base, both as of September 2026. The no-wrapping point covers BTC collateral only: a Ducat borrower who chooses USDC receives USDC through a 1:1 conversion via the Circle SDK.

  6. No KYC or identity documents, unlike Ledn and Unchained, but not unscreened

Ducat asks for no KYC or identity documents, whereas Ledn states that identity verification and location eligibility apply, and Unchained's Terms of Service state that Unchained conducts full anti-money laundering and know-your-customer verification checks on its users, as of September 2026. Ducat still screens access: Ducat is unavailable to residents of 10 prohibited jurisdictions, uses IP geo-blocking and VPN detection, and its Terms geo-restrict some features elsewhere, including trade and swap features in all European Union member states (see the KYC answer below).

Who Uses Ducat

Ducat is built for Bitcoin holders who want dollar liquidity without selling their BTC or handing it to a company. Ducat is in Mainnet Closed Alpha, so borrowing is invite-only today, and Ducat does not publish mainnet usage figures or the size of each user group.

Ducat is not for borrowers who want a customer service team, a regulated counterparty with recourse, a long track record or someone else to manage their collateral ratio, and Ducat is not available to residents of 10 prohibited jurisdictions, with some features geo-restricted elsewhere.

The Team Behind Ducat

Ducat was founded in 2023 by David Evans, Alex Forshaw and Lucas Rodriguez Benitez, and publicly announced in April 2024. Co-Founder and CEO David Evans has written that he built Ducat because “Bitcoin lending should stay on Bitcoin and custody should stay with the borrower”, and that the 2022 collapse of the custodial lender Celsius is the clearest illustration of why custody structure matters. Evans has also written that two design choices were never really debated within the Ducat team: build on Bitcoin L1, and never put users' Bitcoin under a company's control.

Ducat is a remote-first team of fintech operators, Wall Street veterans and blockchain engineers, led by its three co-founders, with decades of combined experience in blockchain engineering, fintech and capital markets. Ducat does not publish a headcount, and Ducat's website names only its three co-founders.

Backers

Ducat has raised $4M in total, as announced in May 2025. UTXO Management led Ducat's pre-seed round and Hivemind Capital led Ducat's strategic round, with participation from CMS and NATIVE (via the Echo platform), among others.

Hivemind Capital

Chainlink

Oracle partner: Chainlink

Chainlink is Ducat's official oracle partner. Ducat worked with Chainlink to build a custom CRE (Chainlink Runtime Environment) integration for Bitcoin, announced in November 2025, in which Chainlink signs attestations of mainnet BTC/USD rates off-chain and the protocol consumes them through hash-lock commitments in Bitcoin OP_RETURN data. The Chainlink oracle cannot move funds, and Ducat's Guardian network cross-checks every Chainlink price against an independent secondary feed before co-signing a liquidation.

How Ducat Works

Ducat borrowers use their own Bitcoin wallet and the Ducat app, and the Ducat team answers questions in the Ducat Discord. This section covers retail and institutional onboarding, who Ducat users work with, what they trust, contact channels, support and settlement times.

How do retail borrowers get access to Ducat?

Ducat's Mainnet Closed Alpha is invite-only, and retail borrowers request access by opening a ticket in the Ducat Discord. The closed-alpha portal at alpha.ducatprotocol.com asks for a one-time code on first entry and offers Xverse and Unisat wallet connections. A new user must open a vault within 7 days to keep access for that wallet.

How do you open a Ducat vault?

Once a borrower has an access code, the borrower connects an Xverse or Unisat wallet at alpha.ducatprotocol.com, deposits BTC into a new vault, waits for the deposit to confirm on Bitcoin, chooses a collateral ratio and borrows UNIT or USDC. The borrower then manages the vault from the Ducat dashboard, which shows its collateral ratio, health factor and liquidation price. The Ducat documentation covers vault management in detail.

How do institutions onboard with Ducat?

Institutions onboard with Ducat in four steps: a technical assessment call, Ducat SDK integration, testnet validation, and go-live on Bitcoin mainnet. The technical assessment typically takes 30 minutes, carries no commitment, and covers the institution's custody setup, compliance requirements and borrowing needs. Institutional borrowers, funds and treasury managers start through the Get in Touch button on the institutional page, which links to the Ducat Discord.

Who do Ducat users work with?

Ducat borrowers sign transactions with their own non-custodial Bitcoin wallet through the Ducat app, an interface provided by Ducat Protocol Inc.; there is no Ducat lending desk, and under its Terms of Service, Ducat Protocol Inc. is not a party to any transaction on the Ducat Protocol. The second key on every Ducat vault is held by the Guardian network, an 11-of-15 FROST threshold signing group, and Chainlink supplies the price attestations that decide whether a vault is eligible for liquidation. Institutional teams speak with the Ducat team directly during the technical assessment.

What do Ducat users have to trust?

Ducat vault spending paths are enforced by Bitcoin Script, and Ducat has no admin keys, no ability to freeze vaults and no way to redirect a borrower's BTC. Ducat users do trust two things: the Guardian network, whose 11-of-15 threshold means 11 Guardians must agree before a signature is produced and which tracks the link between locked BTC and issued UNIT off-chain, and Chainlink's BTC/USD price attestations, which Guardians cross-check against a secondary feed. If the Chainlink oracle goes down, no new borrows or liquidations can occur, although BTC stays in its vault; the security page sets out the full trust model.

Which channels does Ducat use to communicate?

The Ducat Discord is Ducat's main channel for community support, alpha access tickets and institutional enquiries. Ducat posts updates on X at @Ducatstable, on Telegram (announcements only) and through an email newsletter. Ducat can be emailed at info@ducatprotocol.com (general), legal@ducatprotocol.com (legal notices) and privacy@ducatprotocol.com (privacy questions).

How quickly does Ducat respond to support requests?

Ducat does not publish a guaranteed response time or service-level agreement. Ducat support runs through the Ducat Discord, where the Ducat team and community answer questions, backed by the Ducat documentation. Because replies are not guaranteed, a borrower whose vault nears the 135% liquidation threshold can add BTC or repay debt directly from the Ducat dashboard.

How long does it take to get BTC back after repaying a Ducat loan?

After repayment, a Ducat borrower redeems BTC in a single Bitcoin block (~10 minutes, plus Bitcoin miner fees), and redemption is permissionless: once the debt is cleared, nobody can stop the borrower from getting their Bitcoin back. Ducat's borrow page compares this with 1-7 business days and an approval step at CeFi lenders. Ducat's product pages describe USDC borrowing as instant dollar liquidity, but Ducat has not published a typical delivery time for USDC loans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ducat was founded in 2023 by David Evans (Co-Founder & CEO), Alex Forshaw (Co-Founder & CPO) and Lucas Rodriguez Benitez (Co-Founder & CTO), and was publicly announced in April 2024. Evans has a background in fintech, Forshaw spent over a decade on Wall Street as a long/short equity analyst and portfolio manager, and Rodriguez Benitez has eight years of experience in blockchain.

Ducat Protocol Inc. is the company behind Ducat, registered in the British Virgin Islands under company number 2146148, and the Ducat team is remote-first. Ducat Protocol Inc. provides the Ducat website and app interface but, under its Terms of Service, does not control or operate the Ducat Protocol. The same Terms state that Ducat Protocol Inc. is not a party to any transaction on the Ducat Protocol and does not retain possession, custody or control of user cryptoassets.

Ducat is in Mainnet Closed Alpha: borrowing on Bitcoin mainnet is open to invited users only, and access is requested through a ticket in the Ducat Discord. Ducat has not yet published mainnet usage figures; the figures on Ducat's homepage (4M+ transactions and 90K+ vaults created) are testnet figures. Ducat describes itself as experimental software that carries risk, including the potential loss of funds.

Ducat has raised $4M in total, as announced in May 2025. UTXO Management led Ducat's pre-seed round and Hivemind Capital led Ducat's strategic round, with participation from CMS and NATIVE (via the Echo platform), among others.

Ducat has completed multiple internal security audits, and external audits are in progress. Ducat is engaging external audit firms to review the full protocol codebase, including the SDK, Guardian network, Validator and Runestone library, and will publish the reports on its security page when they are finalised. No external audit report has been published yet.

Ducat does not require KYC or identity documents to borrow. Ducat is not available to residents of Belarus, mainland China, Crimea, Cuba, Donetsk, Iran, Luhansk, Myanmar, North Korea or Russia, and Ducat's Terms of Service prohibit using a VPN to get around these restrictions, geo-restrict vault creation, UNIT minting and liquidation auctions in some other jurisdictions, and restrict trade and swap features in all European Union member states. Ducat's Privacy Policy says the interface collects IP addresses for geo-blocking and VPN detection, and Ducat Protocol Inc. may share wallet data with blockchain analytics providers to detect and prevent illicit activity.

Ledn's bitcoin-backed loans are custodied, with collateral held in custody for the life of the loan, and Ledn charges 11.49% APR on loans under $250,000, as of September 2026. A Ducat borrower's BTC stays in a 2-of-2 Taproot multisig vault, and Ducat charges 0% ongoing interest plus a one-time 7% minting service charge on the borrow amount, so at that rate Ducat costs less than Ledn on loans open longer than about 7.3 months and Ledn costs less on shorter ones. Ledn has funded loans since 2018 and has a Client Success team, while Ducat is newer and relies on documentation and community support.

The main way to reach the Ducat team is the Ducat Discord, which handles community support, alpha access requests and institutional enquiries. Ducat can also be emailed at info@ducatprotocol.com, with legal notices going to legal@ducatprotocol.com and privacy questions to privacy@ducatprotocol.com. Ducat does not publish a guaranteed response time.
